African SunTrips to Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park covers more than 20,800 square kilometers, is the largest national park in Kenya and is divided in two regions, Tsavo East and Tsavo West, by the Mombasa-Nairobi road and the neighboring railroad.

During the last century, Tsavo West has been popular worldwide due to the large elephant herds (in 1960 the elephant population was around 50,000!). Along the time, the thick forests were gradually turned into grassland by them. Due to this fact and intensive hunting their number was reduced to only 5,000! Now the grassland is changing again to new forest. Hunting has been a major problem in this park to all species and as result the black rhino population was reduced from about 7,000 in 1969 to less than 100 in 1981!

Tsavo West is approximately 9000 square kilometers and include Ngulia Mountains and Ndawe Escarpment, parts of the same volcanic convulsions that created the Rift Valley, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Tsavo East National Park is less visited than Tsavo West, has approximately 11,000 square kilometers and is a mix of bush land and desert.
